South Africa is one of the most botanically diverse countries on Earth, home to over 20,000 recorded plant species across nine distinct biomes. These private botanical tours are designed for guests with a genuine interest in plants — their form, function, adaptability, and role within the ecosystems that sustain them.
Departing from Johannesburg, we explore grasslands, savannahs, wetlands, riparian corridors, and mountain environments, focusing on how plants have evolved to thrive under vastly different climatic and geological conditions. Walks are unhurried and immersive, allowing time for observation, discussion, photography, and a deeper appreciation of the landscapes that shape South Africa’s extraordinary flora.
Botanical tours are primarily walking-based guided experiences, designed to bring you into close contact with plants in their natural environments. Depending on the venue, this may involve gentle nature walks, longer hikes, or short drives between botanically distinct areas before continuing on foot.
Tours are always adapted to the interests and physical ability of the guests, with a strong emphasis on plant identification, ecological relationships, seasonal changes, and the ways in which plants respond to soil, climate, fire, and grazing pressure. Where relevant, traditional and cultural uses of plants — including medicinal, edible, and utilitarian species — are also discussed.
These tours are ideally suited to guests with a specific interest in botany or plant-focused ecology, and who enjoy exploring landscapes on foot. A reasonable level of mobility and fitness is recommended, as many of the most rewarding botanical environments are best accessed by walking.
While flexibility is always maintained, this tour type may not be suitable for guests who require wheelchair access or are unable to walk unaided. Guests seeking a broader wildlife-focused experience may prefer one of our general wildlife or multi-discipline tours.
The greater Johannesburg and Gauteng region lies primarily within the Grassland and Savanna Biomes, yet contains remarkable botanical diversity. Within a relatively small geographic area, more than 70 recognised grassland vegetation types and over 100 savanna vegetation types occur, alongside wetlands, river systems, mountain ridges, and sheltered valleys.

Specific locations are selected based on season, recent rainfall, flowering conditions, and guest interests.
While certain plant groups are most visually striking during specific seasons, South Africa offers botanical interest throughout the year, with different species flowering and fruiting at different times. Each itinerary is planned with seasonal conditions in mind to ensure meaningful encounters, regardless of the time of year.
Multi-day private botanical journeys can also be arranged for guests wishing to explore regions further afield, such as the spring wildflower displays of the West Coast or biome-specific destinations across the country. These experiences require advance planning and are best suited to guests with a dedicated botanical focus.
Tours range from half-day to full-day experiences, with multi-day itineraries available on request. All tours depart from and return to Johannesburg unless otherwise arranged.
Group sizes are intentionally kept small, typically one to four guests (up to 8 if pre-arranged), allowing for flexibility, discussion, and unhurried exploration.
As an example, a privately guided half-day botanical experience with lunch, departing Johannesburg and visiting a venue such as Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, typically starts from approximately R2,200 per person for two guests. Final pricing depends on duration, group size, and specific locations selected.
